First Impressions : the Tenth Doctor
For years, I have been wanting to get into Who-ism. I had always tried to read the books and I am guilty of falling asleep after reading a few pages. Then they revived the show. And being the procrastinator that I am I did not watch it until two days ago. I had been researching on which doctor to start with, since the series is more than 50 years old.
I did not want to start with something that was very old because I knew if I did, then I would start despising the show. So after reading at least 10 articles about Doctors, half of which I didn’t understand as I hadn’t watched the show, they gave me the Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant.
That eccentric Doctor has been very fascinating. I binged on two seasons of the revived Doctor Who and thought to myself, why didn’t I find this brilliant thing earlier? Some people find this boring, but how can they even? I would say I am a fan of space related stories. And I am captivated by time travel and this show had it both.
This show had it all: travel in space and time, the peculiar and delightful Doctor, the assistant and the villains. To begin with this show is British. That is like the first and primary reason that anyone who doesn’t know about the show would watch it for. Now how can I describe how beautiful this show is?
So some key points. I apologise if I this sounds muddled, but I can’t really put these thoughts in order so here goes. Mainly, this show shows the potential of humanity. The ones who have lost faith in it must watch this show. How the Doctor envies humanity, how he looks at it as if it was the most stunning entity in the universe and in all of time. These thoughts are of a time lord, one of the most powerful man. He has a huge place for humans in his heart. He interacts with humans the most even though he could be anywhere in the universe, he chooses earth over and over again. May be he sees that he and the humans are the same. Both their instincts being for survival even in the most difficult of times.
The second amusing thing about the show is how the Doctor refuses to carry a weapon around with him. Every time the TARDIS reaches a new destination, it is like a beacon for complications. And the Doctor faces each and every one of them just by his wit, knowledge and the sonic screwdriver that is so amazing, waiting for him to take out his glasses and put them on and go into the total nerd mode. Another good thing about the show is that there is no gooey romance with the Doctor and his companion every time, like every other show. They share bond much better , I would say .That is very distinctive and refreshingly new from all the other shows with similar characters.
For now, this show shows a lot of promise for me, as the mysteries keep increasing (what with the Regeneration, Captain Jack, Doctor's real IDENTITY!!!!) and I have absolutely no idea why this show is not being as appreciated as it should be. I like David Tennant as the Doctor so far. Let’s see how the show turns out later.
